Springer Spaniel – Wonderful Dogs, Constant Companions
English Springer Spaniel is extremely smart and learn very quickly. The Springer is the right choice for either a city or country home because they are so eager to please, loyal and like people. They are energetic and playful animals, and many owners find humor in their play. With proper training the can excel in agility, tracking, retrieving, obedience, hunting, and field trials. They are the perfect choice for families because they are so wonderful with children. Of course as with any dog breed, children should always be supervised to make sure they are not antagonizing the dog.
Owners will be satisfied with a Springer because they are so friendly and eager to please. There are people who use the sweet temperament of a Golden Retriever to describe the Springer’s personality. They are happy to just be with their family even if that means just lying around the house. Human contact helps them to adjust and adapt to different levels of activity. As a breeder we have raised many puppies and we can personally definitely testify to their high levels of affection!
Normally weighing between 35-55 pounds at adulthood this is the English Springer Spaniel breed which is medium in size. They are generally very strong dogs that live anywhere between ten and fourteen years. Field bred Spingers have short hair and are generally more active than the show bred types. Both field bred and show bred Springer Spaniels have docked tails. The difference is, the field bred dogs tail is docked longer. The reason for this is that the tail is an important hunting tool It acts as an alert signal for the hunter.
English Springer Spaniels generally have two different variations of colored fur which are either black and white or liver and white. The tri-color coloration of black, liver, and white, is quite rare and will usually occur when the sire and dam are both tri-color. These are easily recognised by the white flash that runs down the middle of their faces.
English Springer Spaniels were bred to be natural hunters with a lot of energy, so you can expect your Springer to enjoy running around, sniffing out “game,”and retrieving things for you. Springers are happy to spend all day outside with their masters, they love water and are not particularly sensitive to weather in general. Because they are an old breed, they have been a favorite canine for many years. These canines are often regarded as one of the oldest and best established gun dog and hunting breeds.
So I hope you can see why we think Springers are a wonderful fit for many different situations, lifestyles, and families. These loving animals can find a place in anyones heart and home which is something we have experienced.
